How I Test and Rate Products

Most "reviews" of urethral sounds online are vendor blog posts or listicles written by people who never touched the product. That is the gap this section exists to fill. I buy each product myself, use it the way you would, and rate it honestly, including when the honest answer is "don't bother." Here is exactly how I do that, so you can judge whether my verdict is worth trusting.
I'm not a doctor. These reviews are based on my own hands-on experience and community-accepted practice, not clinical or laboratory testing. Always consult a healthcare provider for medical concerns, and stop if anything hurts.
What I score, and why
Every review scores the same five core dimensions, in the same order, so you can put any two products side by side and compare them on the same terms. A review may add an extra dimension or two when a product needs it, but these five are always present.
- Hygiene & sterilization: How easily and thoroughly the product can be cleaned and sterilized between sessions, and whether its materials, seams, or construction trap fluid or resist proper cleaning. This matters more than almost anything else for something that goes inside the urethra.
- Safety: How predictable and controllable the product is in hands-on use: edge and tip finish, rigidity or flex, stopper and flare design, and how forgiving it is of a mistake. This is one tester's experience with a single unit, not a lab test or a regulatory determination.
- Sizing accuracy: Whether the real, measured dimensions match what the listing claims. Mislabeled sizing is a genuine safety issue, especially for beginners choosing a first tool.
- Build quality: Materials, finish, and how well the product holds up over repeated use and cleaning. Cheap construction that degrades is both a value problem and, over time, a hygiene one.
- Value: Whether the actual experience justifies the price, and how it stacks up against alternatives at a similar or slightly higher cost.
Scores run from 1 to 5. A score is my subjective judgment of the specific unit I bought, not a measurement that would hold for every unit off the line. Manufacturing varies, especially at the budget end, so treat a single score as one informed opinion, not a guarantee.
How I test
- Real use, not a glance. I test each product across multiple sessions, not a single unboxing, so wear, cleaning, and how it behaves on a second or third use all factor into the score.
- Sterilization between sessions. I clean and sterilize every product the way the material allows before and after each use. If a product cannot be properly sterilized, that is a hygiene problem and the score reflects it.
- Sizing checked against the listing. Where sizing matters, I compare the real product against what the listing claims, and I measure it directly when the situation calls for it. Mislabeled sizing is a real safety issue, so I call it out.
- Photographed myself. Where there are photos, they are of the actual unit I bought and tested, not manufacturer stock.
What I buy, and who pays
By default, I buy every product I review with my own money. When that is the case, the review says so plainly. If a product is ever provided free by a seller, the review states that clearly near the top, because a free product is a material connection you deserve to know about. A free unit never buys a better score.
Negative reviews and corrections
A review section where everything scores well is a review section you cannot trust. If a product is poorly made, hard to clean, or genuinely risky in my experience, I say so, and I anchor every criticism to what I actually observed with the unit I tested.
